The Amalfi Coast is a single winding road with a photograph at every bend. Amalfi itself gives the cathedral steps and a working harbour, Atrani next door is quieter and prettier, and the terraces above Conca dei Marini look straight down onto the water. The cathedral staircase in Amalfi
Sixty-two steps rising from the piazza to a striped Arab-Norman facade — the one place on the coast where a couple can be photographed from directly below.
Best time: First light, before the square fills — the facade stays in even shade until late morning
Saturdays the steps are in near-constant wedding use. The cloister and interior are ticketed with separate hours — check them if you want to go inside.
Fiordo di Furore from the bridge
A narrow flooded ravine crossed by a road viaduct, with a handful of fishermen's houses and a scrap of beach at the bottom.
Best time: Late morning to early afternoon, when the sun reaches into the ravine
About 200 steps down to the beach, which can be closed or awash in rough seas — check conditions. Parking is two small laybys on the SS163.
Atrani — Piazza Umberto I and the beach arch
The smallest town in southern Italy: a single enclosed square of arcades and stairs, opening through an arch straight onto the beach.
Best time: Morning for direct sun in the square; the rest of the day for soft open shade
Shoot the beach tunnel from both sides — it frames the square one way and the sea the other. Almost everything here involves steps.

A long flight of steps down and back up, and only a few parking spaces above. Check whether a ceremony is booked before planning the terrace.

How slow is the Amalfi coast road in August?
Slow enough to plan around. In high summer the twenty-odd kilometres between Sorrento and Amalfi can take well over an hour, with coaches reversing at the tight bends and no parking at the end of it. One village photographed properly beats three reached in a rush, and a boat transfer is often quicker. Check whether the alternating number-plate restrictions are running on your dates.
