Italy is the most rewarding country in Europe to be photographed in — and for exactly that reason the hardest to plan. Rome or Venice, lake or coast, city or hills? The honest answer does not come from a ranking of places but from three questions: what is the occasion, which month are you travelling, and how early are you willing to get up. This guide sorts the country along those three questions.

- Couples session on holiday: Rome and Florence. Both give you a world-famous backdrop with no advance planning — Rome with drama and variety, Florence with the most compact route in Italy: three different worlds inside an hour on foot.
- Proposal: the lakes. North against south
The north — the lakes, Venice, Milan — is alpine in character, elegant and predictable: milder summers, short transfers from the airports, backdrops made of villas, mountains and water. It is the right half of the country for spring and autumn, for proposals and elopements, and for anyone who prefers quiet to spectacle.
The south — the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Sicily — is Mediterranean and dramatic: rock coastlines, bougainvillea, sea in every second frame. The season runs longer (it stays warm into October), but high summer is hot and crowded. The south rewards travellers in the shoulder months — May, June, September, October — with the best ratio of light, warmth and space.
The rule of thumb: if you travel in July or August, go north or go to the water; if you travel in May or October, you have a free choice and should take the south.

We couldn't recommend Georgiana more as a wedding photographer! From our very first meeting, we knew she would be an absolute dream to work with. She took the time to meet us at our venue months before the wedding — even late in the evening when that was the only time we were available! The rule that holds everywhere
Whichever place you pick, the best window is early morning. At seven, the Trevi Fountain, St Mark's Square and the lakeside promenades belong to locals and to you; at eleven they belong to everybody. The second-best answer is the golden hour before sunset — warmer in the light, but busier in the background. A local photographer is doubly valuable in this arithmetic: they know not only the places, but the hours at which those places work.

Frequently asked questions
How many places can we cover in one session?
One hour realistically means one neighbourhood or one lakefront — two or three backdrops if they are within a ten-minute walk of each other, which is why Florence outperforms Rome on a single hour. Two hours buys a genuine change of scene, and three hours buys a city crossing or two coastal villages. Transfers come out of the booked time, so a session that looks like three locations on a map is often two once the traffic is counted.
Which month is best overall for photos in Italy?
If you can choose freely, take late May or the first half of October. Both give long golden hours, warm but not punishing temperatures, open landscape and thinner crowds than July. November through March is the quiet secret for the cities: Venice, Rome and Florence are at their emptiest and the low winter sun flatters the stone all day. Only the high mountains and some coastal ferries genuinely close down in winter.
Do we need to book far ahead to get a good photographer?
For a weekday session outside July and August, two to three weeks is usually enough. For a Saturday in peak season, for sunrise slots in Venice or Positano, or for anything around a public holiday, four to eight weeks is safer — the good photographers in the small towns are a handful of people, and dawn is the slot everyone wants. Proposals and weddings should be booked as soon as the date is fixed.
