Everything here involves stairs, so cooler hours matter: July and August bring real heat, cruise tenders and queues at every station. May, June and late September are ideal, while in winter the villages are quiet and many places close.

Not for the villages themselves — the streets, harbours and terraces are free to walk at any hour. The coastal footpaths between them are another matter: the main sections of the Sentiero Verde Azzurro, including the Via dell'Amore, are ticketed through the Cinque Terre Card, which also covers the local trains, and stretches close after landslides.
