About Riomaggiore harbour slipway at sunset
Get directionsRiomaggiore has no harbour basin, only a narrow gap in the cliffs at the bottom of the main street. Boats are winched up the slipway and left sitting in the road, which is one of the most characteristic sights in Liguria: a working fishing fleet parked between houses.
The slipway is the location. From the water end, looking back up, the boats make a foreground and the village rises behind them in bands of orange, yellow and green. From the rocks on the left, you get the same stack across the inlet, with the sea in front. It faces south-west, so the sun sets straight into the gap and the last twenty minutes light the whole village front — one of the few Cinque Terre villages where sunset actually falls on the houses rather than behind them.
The rocks either side are the classic sitting spot and they are genuinely slippery when wet, with no railing and deep water below; in any swell the ramp itself takes waves. This is a place to check the sea before promising it. The village is a five-minute walk from top to bottom, all of it downhill on the way in, and the station is at the top with a tunnel through to the main street.
