Couples Photographer in the Dolomites

A couples session in the Dolomites is one valley done properly — a lift up, an hour on the meadow, and coffee on a hut terrace while the light drops.

About Dolomites

The Dolomites are photographed from bases, not from one town. Alpe di Siusi is the largest high meadow in Europe with the Sassolungo behind it, and the cable car from Ortisei or Siusi puts you on it in a quarter of an hour — check the first and last departures, because the road up is closed to cars during the day. Lago di Braies is the postcard: wooden boats, turquoise water and a wall of rock behind, best before eight when the light comes over the ridge and the car park is still empty (summer access is regulated, so check before you drive). Seceda and the Val Gardena ridges give the sharpest skyline in the range, and Tre Cime di Lavaredo the three most recognisable peaks, at the end of a toll road up to Rifugio Auronzo. Summer means green meadows and wildflowers, late October turns the larches gold, and from December it is all snow — three completely different sets of photographs. Mountain huts are private businesses: ask before shooting on a terrace, and count on afternoon storms in July and August.

Top Photo Spots in the Dolomites

The most photogenic locations for your Dolomites photoshoot

Alpe di Siusi at sunrise

The largest high meadow in Europe, with the Sassolungo and the Sella group across it — and a first hour of light that belongs to whoever came up early.

Best time: The hour after sunrise; the last hour before the final cable car down

Check the first and last cable car before you plan anything — the road up is closed to cars during the day. It is around ten degrees colder than the valley, and afternoon storms are normal in July and August.

Lago di Braies

Turquoise water, a wooden boathouse and a wall of rock at the far end — the most photographed lake in the Alps, and empty for about an hour a day.

Best time: First light until eight; late afternoon once the day visitors leave

Summer road access is regulated and changes year to year — check before you rely on a car. Boat hire is seasonal and the jetty is private property, so ask before setting up on it.

Seceda and the Val Gardena ridge

A grass ridge that ends in a row of vertical rock blades — the sharpest, most graphic skyline in the Dolomites, reached by lift from Ortisei.

Best time: Early morning for a rimmed ridge; the two hours before sunset for light on faces

Check the last lift down and the weather at 2,500 m, not in the valley. Bring a layer and shoes with grip — the grass is steep and slippery when damp.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo

Three vertical towers standing alone above a stony basin — the most recognisable silhouette in the Alps, and a toll road that takes you to its foot.

Best time: The last hour of light from the south side; sunrise on the north face

The toll road to Rifugio Auronzo is seasonal and paid per car — check it is open. The north-face path is an hour each way on level ground; say so before anyone chooses shoes.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a typical couples photoshoot in Italy?

Most couples sessions last 60 to 90 minutes, which gives you enough time to visit 2-3 locations and capture a wide variety of natural, relaxed poses and candid moments together. During this time, your photographer will guide you through different backdrops — perhaps starting at a scenic viewpoint, moving to a charming side street, and finishing at a waterfront or garden. Longer 2-hour sessions are perfect for couples who want to explore more of a city. Book your session with Photo Italy and let us match you with the ideal photographer for your style.

What should we wear for a couples photoshoot?

The golden rule is to coordinate without matching — choose complementary colors and classic styles that reflect your personality. Solid colors and muted tones (navy, cream, sage, terracotta) photograph beautifully against Italy's warm-toned architecture and lush green landscapes. Avoid busy patterns, large logos, or neon colors that can distract from you as a couple. Comfortable shoes are essential, especially in Rome and Florence where cobblestone streets and hillside viewpoints are common. Bring a second outfit if you'd like variety — many couples change halfway through longer sessions. Your Photo Italy photographer will provide a personalized style guide based on your chosen location, season, and time of day.

When is the best time of day for a couples photoshoot?

Golden hour — the hour after sunrise or before sunset — provides the most flattering, warm, romantic light and is universally recommended by professional photographers. In Italy, sunset times range from around 5:30pm in winter to 9:00pm in summer, so plan accordingly. Sunset sessions in Rome and Florence are especially popular because the westward-facing viewpoints catch the light over the river and rooftops beautifully. Sunrise shoots are quieter and give you famous landmarks nearly to yourselves, which is ideal for Siena or heavily touristed areas. Midday sessions can work but require a photographer experienced with harsh light. Your Photo Italy photographer will recommend the ideal timing for your specific location and season.

How much does a photoshoot in the Dolomites cost?

Professional photoshoots in the Dolomites start from €310. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos, from a short session on one meadow to a half-day that takes in a cable car and two valleys. Lift tickets and mountain transport are separate — agree them with your photographer when you book.

What are the best photo spots in the Dolomites?

Alpe di Siusi for meadows with the Sassolungo behind them, Lago di Braies for the wooden boats and turquoise water, Seceda and the Val Gardena ridges for the sharpest skyline in the range, Tre Cime di Lavaredo for the three peaks, and the passes — Sella, Gardena, Giau — for frames you reach without a hike. Your photographer will pick one valley per session; the range is far bigger than it looks on a map.

What is the best time of year for photos in the Dolomites?

Late June to September gives green meadows, wildflowers and open mountain roads; the second half of October turns the larches gold; from late December to March everything is snow. Within the day, the first hour after sunrise is the calm one — afternoon storms are normal in July and August, and by ten the light on pale rock is hard.
