Lago di Braies

The lake is small, the loop path around it takes an hour, and every frame is the same three elements: green water, wooden rowing boats and the Croda del Becco closing the end of the valley. The classic shot is from the jetty by the boathouse looking south; the quieter one is from the far shore, twenty minutes along the eastern path, where the boats become a detail instead of the subject.

Before eight the water is still and there is nobody on the jetty. By ten the car park is full, the boats are out and the path is a slow queue. Summer access is regulated — in high season the road up is restricted for part of the day and the bus is the reliable way in, so check the current rules rather than assuming you can drive to the door.

Autumn is the strongest season: fewer people, larch colour on the slopes, mist on the water in the first hour. In winter the lake freezes and the boathouse sits on white.
