About Seceda and the Val Gardena ridge
Get directionsSeceda is the one frame people recognise without knowing the name: a green slope tilting up to the left, and the Odle blades dropping away vertically on the far side. Cable car from Ortisei plus a gondola gets you to 2,500 metres in about twenty minutes, and the viewpoint is a five-minute walk from the top station — this is the Dolomites shot that asks for no hiking at all.
Stand back from the edge and use the slope: a figure placed a third of the way up the grass gives scale to a wall that is otherwise impossible to read. Morning light comes from behind the ridge and rims it; late afternoon puts the sun on the faces and lets you shoot into the valley instead.
It is exposed, it is often ten degrees colder than Ortisei, and cloud can close it in minutes. Check the lift's last descent — walking down from Seceda is a two-hour affair nobody plans for in wedding clothes.
Best time to shoot
Early morning for a rimmed ridge; the two hours before sunset for light on faces
Tips
Check the last lift down and the weather at 2,500 m, not in the valley. Bring a layer and shoes with grip — the grass is steep and slippery when damp.
