The Duomo staircase in Amalfi belongs to nobody before nine, the Path of the Gods above Praiano has clean side light until ten, and the boats out of Amalfi and Positano make an early sea shoot possible in a way an afternoon one is not — by two the water is a traffic jam of tenders and day-trippers.
Getting between towns without losing the day
The SS163 is one lane in each direction with a coach on every bend, and in July and August it is a genuine constraint, not an inconvenience: allow an hour between Ravello and Positano rather than the forty minutes the map claims. Many couples solve it with a boat — Amalfi to Positano is thirty minutes on the water and gives you a set of frames from the sea that no road position can.
Both Positano and Amalfi restrict cars in the centre, so the last stretch to most venues is on foot or by small local transfer, and every one of these towns is stairs.
