Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the Gran Madre
A vast arcaded square sloping down to the Po, a stone bridge, and a domed neoclassical church on the far bank.
About Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the Gran Madre
Get directionsPiazza Vittorio Veneto runs from the end of Via Po down to the river, arcaded along both long sides and so wide that it reads almost as a landscape. At the bottom, the stone bridge of Vittorio Emanuele I crosses the Po straight to the Gran Madre di Dio, a domed neoclassical church built to celebrate the return of the Savoy king in 1814, with the green slope of the hill rising behind it.
The bridge is the strongest frame: a couple at the parapet with the church and the hill behind, or turned the other way, with the square and its arcades leading back into the city. Below the square, the Murazzi — the old river embankments — give stone arches and the water at eye level.
Early morning is the time, when the square is nearly empty and the low sun lights the front of the church. Evening works too, from the bridge, as the light turns gold on the river.

Tips
Use the bridge for the classic frame and the arcades along the square for shade at midday. The steps down to the Murazzi are just below the square.
