Parco del Valentino and the Borgo Medievale
A riverside park of plane-tree avenues, a Savoy castle and a nineteenth-century copy of a medieval village.
About Parco del Valentino and the Borgo Medievale
Get directionsThe Valentino park follows the left bank of the Po south of the centre, and it is where Turin goes to walk. The avenue along the river runs under tall plane trees, the Castello del Valentino — a seventeenth-century Savoy residence, now part of the Politecnico — stands across a wide lawn, and a little further on the Borgo Medievale imitates a fifteenth-century Piedmontese village, built for the exhibition of 1884 with a castle, a gate and painted houses.
It is the easiest place in Turin for relaxed, moving pictures: walking by the river, sitting on the grass, children running between the trees. Inside the Borgo, the narrow lanes and the gateway give a different, storybook frame a few minutes' walk away.
Mornings are softest under the trees. The rose garden flowers in May, and from late October the plane trees turn yellow and the paths fill with leaves.
Best time to shoot
Mornings under the trees; May for the roses, late October for the autumn colour
Tips
Walk the river avenue for candid movement shots, then finish in the lanes of the Borgo Medievale. It is a good family spot — flat, shaded and with room for children to run.
