About Pizzo

Pizzo is built on a cliff above the Gulf of Sant'Eufemia, and its life gathers in one square, Piazza della Repubblica, open to the sea on one side and lined with cafรฉs where the town's famous tartufo โ€” a ball of gelato with a liquid chocolate heart โ€” was created. At the end of the square stands the Aragonese castle where Joachim Murat, Napoleon's brother-in-law and King of Naples, was imprisoned and executed in 1815; it now carries his name. Below the town, on the beach to the north, the Piedigrotta church is carved into the sandstone of a sea cave, its chapels filled with statues cut from the rock itself โ€” a story that begins with Neapolitan sailors saved from a shipwreck in the seventeenth century. Pizzo is smaller and quieter than Tropea, about half an hour up the coast, and close to Lamezia Terme airport.

Frequently asked questions

What if my kids won't cooperate during the photoshoot?

Our photographers are experienced with children of all ages and know that kids will be kids โ€” that's actually what makes family photos so authentic and charming. They use games, silly jokes, piggyback rides, tickle attacks, and natural play to capture genuine laughter and real connections. Some of the best family photos come from spontaneous, unscripted moments when a toddler runs off or siblings start goofing around. Your photographer will keep the energy light and fun, taking breaks when needed. Sessions with young children (under 5) are often scheduled in the morning when energy levels are highest. Don't worry about perfection โ€” book with Photo Italy and let your photographer handle the rest.

What's the best age for a family photoshoot?

Every age is perfect for a family photoshoot in Italy. Photographers adapt their approach to suit your children: for babies and toddlers (6 months to 3 years), they focus on natural play, cuddles, and close-up moments in calm settings like gardens or beaches. For children aged 4-10, sessions become more interactive with exploring, jumping, and adventure-style shots at castles or along waterfronts. Teenagers respond well to a relaxed, editorial approach that makes them feel cool rather than forced. Multi-generational families with grandparents benefit from Italy's accessible promenades in Positano or Amalfi. The key is choosing a location and time that suits your youngest family member. Photo Italy photographers will tailor the entire session to your family's ages and energy levels.

How should we dress for a family photoshoot?

Choose a coordinated color palette rather than matching outfits โ€” this creates visual harmony without looking staged. Earth tones (tan, olive, cream), pastels (dusty rose, light blue), and classic blues work beautifully against Italy's warm sandstone buildings and green landscapes. Avoid neon colors, large logos, and busy patterns that can distract from faces and expressions. Layers add visual interest: a light scarf, denim jacket, or cardigan works well. Comfortable shoes are essential, especially for Rome's cobblestone streets and Florence's historic lanes โ€” sneakers or sandals with grip are ideal for kids. Your Photo Italy photographer will send a personalized style guide after booking, with specific recommendations based on your location, season, and family size.

How much does a photoshoot in Pizzo cost?

Each photographer sets their own all-in price, shown on every package on their profile, and nothing is added at checkout; the current prices of the photographers who work in Pizzo are on this page. Packages differ by how long the session runs and how many edited photos you receive: an hour covers the square, the castle and the lanes, two hours add the beach and Piedigrotta.

What are the best photo spots in Pizzo?

Piazza della Repubblica and its terrace over the sea; the walls of the Murat castle at its end; the steps and lanes that drop from the old town to the marina; and the Piedigrotta church carved into the rock on the beach north of town, best visited outside the midday crowds.

When should we plan a photoshoot in Pizzo?

In the late afternoon: the square and the castle look west over the gulf, so the light turns warm in the last hours before sunset. May, June and September are the most comfortable months; August evenings are lively and crowded. Piedigrotta has an entrance fee and its own opening hours โ€” check before you go. Pizzo is about twenty-five minutes from Lamezia Terme airport and half an hour from Tropea, so it fits easily into a day on the coast.
