Photo spot in Pizzo
The Piedigrotta church
A church carved into a sea cave on the beach north of Pizzo, filled with statues cut from the rock.
About The Piedigrotta church
Get directionsPiedigrotta began, the story goes, with Neapolitan sailors who survived a shipwreck here in the seventeenth century and carved a chapel in the cave where they had taken shelter. Over the following centuries, and above all from the late 1800s, local sculptors cut whole scenes into the sandstone walls — saints, a nativity, figures that seem to grow out of the rock.
Inside, the light is low and the space is small, so photos there are about texture and atmosphere; outside, the entrance faces the beach and the sea, an easier frame for portraits.
Piedigrotta has an entrance fee and its own opening hours and rules for photography — check before you go. It is busiest around midday in summer; early or late is calmer.
Best time to shoot
Morning or late afternoon, outside the midday visits
Tips
Plan the portraits outside, on the beach by the entrance, and keep the interior for a few atmospheric frames.
