Photo spot in Pizzo
Piazza della Repubblica and the Murat castle
The town's square, open to the sea on one side, with the Aragonese castle at its end.
About Piazza della Repubblica and the Murat castle
Get directionsPiazza della Repubblica is Pizzo's living room: a long square of cafรฉs and gelaterias that ends at a terrace over the Gulf of Sant'Eufemia. The tartufo, a ball of gelato with a liquid chocolate centre, was created here in the 1950s and is still served at the tables.
At the far end stands the castle, built by the Aragonese in the fifteenth century, where Joachim Murat, King of Naples, was imprisoned and executed in 1815. Its stone walls and the views from the streets around it work well for portraits in the warm evening light.
The square fills up on summer evenings; earlier in the afternoon it is calmer. The castle is a museum with its own opening hours.
Best time to shoot
The last two hours before sunset
Tips
Start at the castle, walk the square to the terrace for the sunset and finish with a tartufo โ it makes a natural, relaxed session.
