Varenna's lakefront promenade — the Passeggiata degli Innamorati — and its pastel harbour, Bellagio's stone lanes and the Punta Spartivento where the lake's branches meet, the gardens of Villa del Balbianello on its wooded peninsula, and the quieter waterfronts of Menaggio. Ferries between the villages are part of the charm and make great in-between shots.

Spring and autumn give Como its finest light — clear air, calm morning water and gardens in colour — while summer works best early, before the day visitors arrive.
