Varenna waterfront and the Lovers' Walk

Varenna is the east shore's answer to Bellagio and, for photographers, usually the better one: smaller, quieter, and arranged like a stage set — pastel houses stacked above a tiny harbour, mountains rising straight out of the water behind. The Passeggiata degli Innamorati, the Lovers' Walk, is the connective tissue: a narrow walkway on stilts that hugs the cliff between the ferry dock and the old village, with railings, climbing flowers and the lake directly below.

The walk itself is the location. It faces west across the lake, so the last hours of light come straight down it, backlighting couples against the water — and its gentle curve means you can always frame a stretch with nobody else on it, even in season. In the village, the harbour front and the lanes climbing to the church square give the second act.

Varenna faces the afternoon sun, so unlike most of the lake it keeps direct light until sunset. The walkway is narrow and shared; work in short takes and let walkers pass rather than holding the path.
