About Dolomites
The Dolomites are photographed from bases, not from one town. Alpe di Siusi is the largest high meadow in Europe with the Sassolungo behind it, and the cable car from Ortisei or Siusi puts you on it in a quarter of an hour — check the first and last departures, because the road up is closed to cars during the day. Lago di Braies is the postcard: wooden boats, turquoise water and a wall of rock behind, best before eight when the light comes over the ridge and the car park is still empty (summer access is regulated, so check before you drive). Seceda and the Val Gardena ridges give the sharpest skyline in the range, and Tre Cime di Lavaredo the three most recognisable peaks, at the end of a toll road up to Rifugio Auronzo. Summer means green meadows and wildflowers, late October turns the larches gold, and from December it is all snow — three completely different sets of photographs. Mountain huts are private businesses: ask before shooting on a terrace, and count on afternoon storms in July and August.

Best time: The hour after sunrise; the last hour before the final cable car down
Check the first and last cable car before you plan anything — the road up is closed to cars during the day. It is around ten degrees colder than the valley, and afternoon storms are normal in July and August.
Lago di Braies
Turquoise water, a wooden boathouse and a wall of rock at the far end — the most photographed lake in the Alps, and empty for about an hour a day.
Best time: First light until eight; late afternoon once the day visitors leave
Summer road access is regulated and changes year to year — check before you rely on a car. Boat hire is seasonal and the jetty is private property, so ask before setting up on it.
Seceda and the Val Gardena ridge
A grass ridge that ends in a row of vertical rock blades — the sharpest, most graphic skyline in the Dolomites, reached by lift from Ortisei.
Best time: Early morning for a rimmed ridge; the two hours before sunset for light on faces
Check the last lift down and the weather at 2,500 m, not in the valley. Bring a layer and shoes with grip — the grass is steep and slippery when damp.
Tre Cime di Lavaredo
