Ponte dell'Accademia and the Grand Canal
The wooden bridge with the best free view in Venice — the Grand Canal curving away to the domes of the Salute.
About Ponte dell'Accademia and the Grand Canal
Get directionsFrom the top of the Accademia bridge the Grand Canal performs its famous curve: palaces on both banks, traffic of gondolas and vaporetti below, and the domes of Santa Maria della Salute closing the view where the canal opens to the lagoon. It is the single best free viewpoint in the city and the standard backdrop for couple portraits on the Grand Canal.
Shoot from the south-east parapet for the Salute view. Gondolas pass constantly and give the frame its scale and motion — wait for one to reach the middle distance rather than the foreground, where it blocks the palaces. Early morning has delivery barges instead of gondolas, which is its own kind of honest Venice.
The bridge is a working thoroughfare and shakes slightly when people cross, so long exposures are out. For a second act, drop down to the Dorsoduro side and work the quiet campi towards the Salute itself — ten minutes of lanes with a fraction of San Marco's foot traffic.
Best time to shoot
Early morning for calm water, or the hour before sunset when the Salute catches the light
Tips
The bridge vibrates with foot traffic — no long exposures. Dorsoduro on the south side is the quiet continuation of the session.

St Mark's Square at sunrise
The basilica, the campanile and the arcades with nobody in them — for one hour a day Venice's grandest room is empty.
Rialto Bridge and the market lanes
The oldest bridge on the Grand Canal, and behind it the market quarter where Venice still shops for fish and vegetables.
Riva degli Schiavoni at dawn
Moored gondolas rocking on the bacino with San Giorgio Maggiore across the water — the most Venetian foreground there is.
Burano
An island of fishermen's houses painted in saturated block colours, forty minutes across the lagoon — a completely different palette from Venice itself.
