Burano

Burano is forty minutes by vaporetto across the northern lagoon, and it looks nothing like Venice. It is a fishing village of low houses painted in saturated, unmixed colour — cobalt, ochre, oxblood, mint — reflected in narrow canals, with a leaning brick campanile behind. The story is that the colours let fishermen find their own house through the fog; the practical result is a location with a palette rather than a monument.

Because the colour is the subject, the light matters more than the angle. Overcast days are genuinely good here: flat light keeps the paint saturated and avoids the hard shadows that cut the facades in half at midday. Early and late, the sun runs along the canals and lights one bank while leaving the other in shade. Dress a client in something neutral — the houses will do all the shouting.

Plan the boat both ways into the session: it is half a day, not an add-on, and the last convenient returns are earlier than people expect. Real families live behind those front doors, so keep doorsteps and washing lines clear and work the canal sides and the bridges rather than the entrances.
