Podere Belvedere above San Quirico
The stone farmhouse on a bare hilltop that appears on every Tuscany poster, with the valley falling away and the road curling below it.
About Podere Belvedere above San Quirico
Get directionsPodere Belvedere is a working farmhouse on a knoll just off the road between San Quirico and Torrenieri. It has become the shorthand image for the Val d'Orcia because of how simply it sits: one square stone building, one cypress beside it, and behind it nothing but ridgelines going soft into the distance.
The photographs are taken from the layby on the SP146 opposite, not from the house itself, which is private and lived in. From there a long lens compresses the ridges into stacked bands and puts the farmhouse small and sharp at the top; a wide lens instead uses the ploughed furrows or the curling farm track in the foreground with the building as a full stop. Two people standing on the verge, small in the frame, give the landscape its scale.
This is the classic fog spot: on autumn and early spring mornings the valley fills and only the top of the knoll stays clear. Sunrise is when it happens, and it is worth the alarm. The layby is small and popular with tripods, so arrive well before the light. Do not walk up to the house — the drive is private and the family has asked repeatedly.
Best time to shoot
Sunrise, especially on misty autumn and early-spring mornings
Tips
Shoot from the layby on the SP146 — the farmhouse is a private home, so do not walk up the drive. The layby fills with tripods before dawn.
