Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta at sunrise

Vitaleta is a chapel the size of a garage standing by itself on a rise between San Quirico d'Orcia and Pienza, framed by two cypresses and nothing else. Its fame is entirely earned: from the right position it reads as a single white shape against rolling wheat, with ridge after ridge of the Val d'Orcia fading behind it to Monte Amiata.

The chapel faces roughly north-west, so sunrise puts warm side-light on the two long walls while mist still sits in the hollows — the classic conditions, and the reason photographers get up for it. Late afternoon works differently: the front goes into shade, but the ridge behind lights up and you can shoot the chapel as a silhouette against a coloured sky.

Practical points that matter here. The chapel stands on private farmland: the approach track from the Pienza road is walkable but the land around it is not public, so stay on the track and do not cross the fields. There is no parking beyond a wide verge, no shade and no facilities. In May the wheat is green, in June gold, and after harvest in July the hillside is bare brown — the same frame looks like three different places across the season.
