Pienza's wall walk at sunset

Pope Pius II had his birthplace rebuilt in the 1460s as a model Renaissance town, and the plan survives intact: a cathedral, a palace and a town hall around one small square, with a single street behind them running along the edge of the ridge. That street, Via del Casello, is a continuous balcony over the valley.

It is the easiest good light in the Val d'Orcia. The terrace faces south and west, so from an hour before sunset the whole valley in front of you goes warm while the honey-coloured stone behind your subjects reflects the same light back onto them. The hanging garden of Palazzo Piccolomini opens off the same wall, adding a loggia and box hedges if the shoot needs a second setting; check its opening hours, which are shorter than the street's.

Pienza is small, walkable and has real parking outside the walls, which makes it the practical choice when a session includes children, grandparents or anyone who cannot manage farm tracks. The lanes behind the main street — Via dell'Amore, Via del Bacio — are narrow, warm-toned and quiet at that hour, and they carry the intimate half of the gallery.
