About Otranto, Gallipoli & the Salento coast
The Salento is the tip of the heel, and its trick is that you can shoot sunrise on one sea and sunset on the other the same day. Otranto is the eastern anchor — a small walled town of white lanes, an Aragonese castle with a dry moat you can walk, and a cathedral whose entire floor is a twelfth-century mosaic of a tree of life laid by a monk named Pantaleone. Ten minutes south, the Punta Palascìa lighthouse marks the easternmost point of Italy, which is where the country's first sunrise lands. North of town the coast turns to low white limestone: Torre Sant'Andrea, where the sea has cut free-standing stacks a few metres offshore, and Roca Vecchia, where a cave roof collapsed onto a round pool of sea water — the Grotta della Poesia, one of the most recognisable frames in the south. Cross to the Ionian side and Gallipoli's old town sits on an island joined to the mainland by a bridge, facing west, so the whole seafront takes the last hour of light. July and August are hot and genuinely crowded, especially in Gallipoli; May, June, September and early October give warm water, open beach clubs and room to work.
