About Assisi & Umbria
Assisi is built along one slope of Monte Subasio in a limestone that goes from cream to rose depending on the hour, and almost every street ends in a view of the Umbrian plain. The Basilica of San Francesco anchors the western end: two churches stacked on each other, with a long arcaded piazza in front that is at its emptiest right after sunrise. Piazza del Comune, halfway up, keeps a Roman temple façade in its side — six columns still standing from the first century — and the lanes climbing off it are steep, narrow and full of geraniums. At the top, the Rocca Maggiore looks down over the whole town and out across the valley; the walk up is short but properly uphill. Below the walls the olive terraces of the Fascia Olivata run for kilometres and give a quiet, green foreground that nobody else is using. Four kilometres above town, the Eremo delle Carceri sits in a holm-oak wood on the mountainside. Assisi is a pilgrimage town as well as a tourist one, so it is busy around Easter, at the Calendimaggio in early May and on the feast of St Francis on 4 October; late spring and September give the softest light and the fewest people.
