Eremo delle Carceri

The Carceri is where Francis and his companions withdrew to, and it has stayed small: a cluster of stone buildings bridging a narrow gorge, with caves in the rock behind and an ancient holm oak in the courtyard.

The appeal is that it is nothing like the rest of Assisi. Instead of open piazzas and long views you get dense green shade, a stone bridge over a dry stream bed, worn steps and doorways barely wide enough for one person. It is the intimate counterweight to the basilica in the same session.

Light here is filtered rather than direct — the woods keep it soft all day, which is unusual and useful in Umbrian summer. Midday actually works, because the canopy does the diffusing.

It is a functioning religious house with free entry, set opening hours and a request for quiet, so a session should be short, low-key and outside the chapels. The last stretch of road is narrow with limited parking, and paths beyond the monastery are proper woodland trails — check the hours and go on foot from the car park.
