Assisi is built along one slope of Monte Subasio in a limestone that goes from cream to rose depending on the hour, and almost every street ends in a view of the Umbrian plain. The Basilica of San Francesco anchors the western end: two churches stacked on each other, with a long arcaded piazza in front that is at its emptiest right after sunrise. Assisi is a pilgrimage town as well as a tourist one, so it is busy around Easter, at the Calendimaggio in early May and on the feast of St Francis on 4 October; late spring and September give the softest light and the fewest people.
