The lanes give shade and a warm, textured backdrop for portraits at any time of day, and many of them end in an opening over the sea. Strings of red onions — Tropea's famous crop — and painted ceramics hang outside the shops and add colour.
The centre is closed to cars and fills with visitors on summer evenings, so the morning is the easiest time for empty streets.
