Photo spot in Tropea
Capo Vaticano at sunset
A headland of granite cliffs and coves south of Tropea, with a lighthouse and a view to Stromboli.
About Capo Vaticano at sunset
Get directionsCapo Vaticano is the headland about ten kilometres south of Tropea, where granite cliffs drop to small coves of white sand and clear water. The viewpoint near the lighthouse looks out over the open sea, and on clear days the volcano of Stromboli and the other Aeolian Islands stand on the horizon.
It is the coast's favourite place to watch the sunset, and the wide view makes for simple portraits with nothing but sea behind. The coves below, such as Grotticelle, are for daytime beach photos.
The cliff paths are uneven and unfenced in places, so sessions keep to the viewpoint and the marked paths. You need a car or a taxi to get there.
Best time to shoot
The hour before sunset
Tips
Bring a layer: the headland is windy in the evening. Check the sunset time — in June it comes after eight.
