Photo spot in Scilla
The Ruffo castle and Marina Grande
The castle on the rock of Scylla, and the long beach beside it facing Sicily.
About The Ruffo castle and Marina Grande
Get directionsThe Ruffo castle crowns the rock that the ancients named after the sea monster Scylla, between Chianalea and the main beach. From its terraces the view takes in the Strait of Messina, the Sicilian coast and the whole sweep of Marina Grande below.
Marina Grande is a long beach of fine pebbles with clear water. From Piazza San Rocco, the viewpoint above it, the beach, the castle and Sicily line up in one frame — the classic photograph of Scilla.
The castle keeps its own opening hours and sometimes hosts events, so check before planning portraits inside. In July and August the beach is full by late morning.
Best time to shoot
Late afternoon, when the castle and the Sicilian hills turn gold
Tips
Start at the Piazza San Rocco viewpoint for the wide view, then walk down to the castle — about ten minutes on foot.
