Photo spot in Scilla
Chianalea
The old fishermen's quarter, where the houses stand in the sea and boats rest between them.
About Chianalea
Get directionsChianalea is the part of Scilla on the far side of the castle rock: one long lane of stone houses whose back walls rise straight from the water, with narrow passages between them that end in steps down to the sea, where boats are pulled up or moored.
For portraits, the passages frame the water and the light reflected off it, and the small balconies and terraces over the sea are the classic picture. In summer the swordfish boats, with their tall lookout masts, are often moored nearby.
Chianalea is lived in and narrow, so sessions keep to the public lanes and steps, and the morning is quieter than the evening, when the restaurants fill up.
Best time to shoot
Morning for quiet lanes; late afternoon for warm light on the water
Tips
Wear shoes with grip โ the steps down to the water can be wet and slippery.
