The cliff terraces on the Lungomare Domenico Modugno

The promenade runs south from the old town along the cliff edge, and every few hundred metres a small terrace pushes out over the drop. They are the town's most useful frames: no buildings behind, no crowd, and a horizon that sits wherever you want it depending on how high you shoot from.

The railings are the only thing to work around — stand your subjects a step in front of one and shoot slightly down, or move to a terrace where the wall is low stone rather than metal. The statue of Domenico Modugno, arms open towards the sea, is the landmark most people ask for; the quieter terraces are the ones fifty metres past it.

Late afternoon is best here: the cliff faces east, so the sun is behind you, the sea goes deep blue, and the white houses of the old town light up if you turn back north.
