About Torre del Moro
Get directionsThe Torre del Moro stands at the crossroads in the middle of Orvieto and is the only place in town that gives height. Forty-seven metres of stone with a lift for the lower half and stairs for the rest, and a small railed platform at the top.
What you get is the view nobody expects from ground level: a field of terracotta roofs with the striped bulk of the Duomo standing out of them on one side and, on every other side, the edge of the rock and then the valley.
Because the platform faces every direction, the light works whenever you are there — the Duomo side is best in the afternoon, the valley sides at sunrise and sunset. The space is small, though, so a group of more than three is a squeeze.
It is ticketed and closes in the late afternoon, earlier from November to February. Check the day's closing time, because sunset is often after the tower shuts; when it is, the same view goes to the far end of Corso Cavour instead.

Tips
The platform is barely three metres across, so shoot one or two people at a time and use the roofs as the subject rather than the background.
