About Pozzo di San Patrizio
Get directionsBuilt in the 1530s so that mules could carry water up without meeting the ones coming down, the well is a double helix in stone: two separate ramps, 248 steps each, lit by seventy-odd windows cut into the central shaft.
Photographically it is a geometry problem and a gift. Looking straight down the shaft gives a perfect spiral of arched openings; standing on a ramp a turn below the camera gives repeating arches receding into green-grey light.
The light is the thing to understand. It comes only from the openings onto the shaft, so it is dim, cool and directional, and it changes with the hour — around midday the shaft is brightest and the bottom is actually visible.
It is ticketed with fixed hours, the steps are damp and worn, and it is genuinely narrow: two people can pass, a group cannot pose. Check the opening times and treat it as a short, tight, two-person part of a session rather than the whole thing.

It is dark enough to need a fast lens and a steady hand; a tripod is impractical on the ramp. Flat shoes only — the steps are shallow, damp and continuous for 248 of them.
