La Morra sits on the highest point of the Barolo zone, and the terrace beside the belvedere on Piazza Castello looks straight down into the amphitheatre of vineyards that produces the wine. Every slope in view is planted, and the rows follow the contours, so the hills are drawn in fine parallel lines.

That pattern is the whole photograph. Put people on the wall and the ribbed hillsides run away behind them for kilometres; step back and the village lane frames the view instead.

It faces south and east, so the light is best early — sunrise here means fog sitting in the valleys with only the hilltops out, which is the image the Langhe are known for — and again in the last hour, when the rows go long and shadowed.

The terrace is public, free and open at all hours, with parking a two-minute walk away in the village. It is also the one spot in the Langhe that gets genuinely busy at sunset in October, so arrive with time in hand.

Sunrise for valley fog, or the last hour for long shadows in the rows

Tips

Shoot from slightly below the wall so the vineyard lines rise behind the subject instead of sitting flat under them. October fog burns off fast — be in place before sunrise, not at it.
