Get directionsLimone grew lemons commercially further north than anywhere else in Europe, and to do it the villagers built limonaie: terraces walled on three sides, with tall stone pillars that carried a removable timber and glass roof each winter. The pillars are still standing, roofless, stepping down the cliff towards the lake.
They give a photographer something no other Garda town has: architecture in the foreground and open water behind it, on the same axis. Rows of pale pillars make a natural colonnade to walk through, the terrace walls give clean lines, and the lemon trees add colour from spring to autumn. The Limonaia del Castèl above the old town is the restored one open to visitors — ticketed, with seasonal hours worth checking, and quiet compared with the lakefront.
The western shore keeps its light late into the evening, the opposite of Malcesine across the water, which makes Limone the better sunset half of a two-stop day. The old village lanes are narrow and stepped, and the lakefront promenade is busy from late morning; the terraces above are where the calm is. Parking is at the top of the town, so allow for a descent on foot.
