Get directionsMontefioralle is a village built as a circle: one street runs all the way round inside the old walls, and stone houses face inward with roses and vines on the walls. It takes ten minutes to walk the whole ring, which makes it an easy first or last stop.
The road up from Greve is the other half of the spot. It climbs through vines with cypresses on the verge, and there are two or three places wide enough to stop safely and photograph back down the valley.
Late afternoon is best in the village, when the western side of the ring is in full sun and the lane inside is in soft shade. Early morning gives mist in the valley below and a completely empty street.
Parking is at the bottom of the village and the last stretch is on foot over cobbles. The road up is narrow with blind bends — pull fully off it before setting up, and treat the verges as part of someone's vineyard, because they are.

Tips
The ring street is barely two metres wide, so a 35mm lens does more here than anything longer. Cars still use it — keep to the wall side when one comes through.
