Badia a Passignano

Passignano looks less like an abbey than a small walled town: square towers, crenellations, a bell tower, and cypresses planted right up to the walls. It has been a working monastery since the eleventh century and Vallombrosan monks still live there.

The best frames are from outside and below. The road that curls up from the Val di Pesa gives the classic view — abbey on its knoll, vine rows fanning out beneath it — and there are gravel turn-outs to stop at. Closer in, the cypress avenue up to the gate is the second shot.

Afternoon light comes across the vines and onto the western walls, so from about four o'clock the stone warms and the rows below carry long shadows. In October the whole foreground turns gold.

The monastery interior is open only on guided visits at set times, and the surrounding vineyards belong to the estate below, so stay on the public road and lanes. Check the visit times if the cloister matters to you; the exterior does not need one.
