Directly above the town, 750 metres up on Monte San Giuliano, Erice is a walled medieval town of pale stone lanes laid in patterns, courtyards, and the Castello di Venere on the cliff edge where the sanctuary of Venus Erycina once stood; a cable car climbs from Trapani in ten minutes, and the town is regularly inside a cloud, which is either a problem or the best light you will get. Half an hour inland the unfinished Doric temple of Segesta stands by itself on a hillside with nothing modern in the frame. North-east, San Vito Lo Capo has white sand under a limestone headland, and Scopello keeps its old tonnara and the rock stacks in front of it. April to June and September to October are the seasons; July and August are hot, and the coast is full.
