Why Ostuni & the Valle d'Itria for Your Photoshoot
Ostuni is called the white town because it is: the old centre has been lime-washed for centuries, and from the plain below it reads as one bright block on a hill with the sea eight kilometres beyond. The way in is from that plain — the road up past the Madonna della Nova gives you the whole town at once, olive branches in the foreground. Inside, the lanes are stepped, arched and narrow, and they all climb to the cathedral, whose late-Gothic front carries an enormous carved rose window that catches the morning light before the square below it does. Behind the town the Valle d'Itria is a low limestone bowl divided by dry-stone walls, with cone-roofed trulli standing in the fields and two hill villages worth the drive: Cisternino, all whitewashed alleys and outdoor stairways, and Locorotondo, whose ring of houses has the steep gabled roofs found nowhere else. Between them are the masserie, fortified farms among olive trees that are several hundred and in places over a thousand years old, and many of them now take guests. White walls make harsh light at noon and beautiful light at either end of the day; May, June, September and October are the comfortable months, while August is hot, full and best shot before eight.
