About Matera
Matera is two halves that photograph each other: the Sassi — Barisano and Caveoso, with the Civita and the cathedral between them — and the Murgia plateau on the far side of the Gravina, where the belvedere holds the whole city in one frame. Dawn is the hour: the stone takes the light before the lanes fill, and the low sun separates the roofs from the caves below them, which by midday flatten into a single grey mass. The rock churches on the Murgia side, and Santa Maria de Idris and San Pietro Barisano in the town, are the interiors worth the walk — most are ticketed and some do not allow photography, so ask at the door. Everything is steps and worn cobbles: bring shoes that grip and count on climbing, because Piazza Duomo to Via Bruno Buozzi to the Sasso Caveoso is a good half-hour of stairs. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; the summer heat is real, and the ravine holds it until late.

Top Photo Spots in Matera
The most photogenic locations for your Matera photoshoot
The Murgia belvedere, across the ravine
The one viewpoint that holds all of Matera in a single frame — the whole city on its cliff, seen from the empty side of the Gravina.
Best time: Sunrise for light on the city; the hour after sunset for the lit Sassi
Go round by road unless everyone is dressed for an hour of rocky path. There is no shade and no water at the viewpoint — bring both in summer.
Piazza Duomo and the cathedral terrace
The highest point of the Civita, where the town ends in a balcony over the Sasso Barisano and the roofs run downhill from your feet.
Best time: The two hours before sunset; the square is quiet until the evening passeggiata
Level ground and no stairs to reach it — the right first stop if anyone in the group struggles with steps. The cathedral interior is a working church with its own rules; ask inside.
Sasso Caveoso and Santa Maria de Idris
The oldest, rawest half of the city: cave façades, staircases cut into rock, and a church sitting on top of a boulder above it all.
Best time: The first two hours after sunrise, before the groups and while the sun is still low
Plan the route downhill and arrange a car or a taxi for the way back. Steps are polished smooth by use — flat shoes with grip, not new soles.
Belvedere Luigi Guerricchio
A small terrace at Piazzetta Pascoli where the whole Sasso Caveoso opens below — the postcard view, two minutes from the main street.
Best time: Sunrise for an empty terrace; blue hour for the lit city
No steps and two minutes from the main street — the accessible alternative to the Sassi lanes. It fills up at sunset, so arrive early and hold your spot at the parapet.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a typical couples photoshoot in Italy?
Most couples sessions last 60 to 90 minutes, which gives you enough time to visit 2-3 locations and capture a wide variety of natural, relaxed poses and candid moments together. During this time, your photographer will guide you through different backdrops — perhaps starting at a scenic viewpoint, moving to a charming side street, and finishing at a waterfront or garden. Longer 2-hour sessions are perfect for couples who want to explore more of a city. Book your session with Photo Italy and let us match you with the ideal photographer for your style.
What should we wear for a couples photoshoot?
The golden rule is to coordinate without matching — choose complementary colors and classic styles that reflect your personality. Solid colors and muted tones (navy, cream, sage, terracotta) photograph beautifully against Italy's warm-toned architecture and lush green landscapes. Avoid busy patterns, large logos, or neon colors that can distract from you as a couple. Comfortable shoes are essential, especially in Rome and Florence where cobblestone streets and hillside viewpoints are common. Bring a second outfit if you'd like variety — many couples change halfway through longer sessions. Your Photo Italy photographer will provide a personalized style guide based on your chosen location, season, and time of day.
When is the best time of day for a couples photoshoot?
Golden hour — the hour after sunrise or before sunset — provides the most flattering, warm, romantic light and is universally recommended by professional photographers. In Italy, sunset times range from around 5:30pm in winter to 9:00pm in summer, so plan accordingly. Sunset sessions in Rome and Florence are especially popular because the westward-facing viewpoints catch the light over the river and rooftops beautifully. Sunrise shoots are quieter and give you famous landmarks nearly to yourselves, which is ideal for Siena or heavily touristed areas. Midday sessions can work but require a photographer experienced with harsh light. Your Photo Italy photographer will recommend the ideal timing for your specific location and season.
How much does a photoshoot in Matera cost?
Professional photoshoots in Matera start from €310. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos, from an hour inside the Sassi to a longer session that crosses the ravine for the belvedere view of the whole city.
What are the best photo spots in Matera?
The Murgia belvedere across the ravine, which holds the whole city in one frame, Piazza Duomo and the terrace beside the cathedral, the stairs of the Sasso Caveoso around Santa Maria de Idris, the roofs seen from Via Bruno Buozzi, and the Belvedere Luigi Guerricchio for the classic view of the Sassi. After dark the town lights up warm and yellow, which is a different session again.
What is the best time of day and season for photos in Matera?
Dawn, and then the last hour before sunset. The stone is the same colour as the light: at midday everything flattens into grey, while a low sun separates the roofs from the caves and turns the whole city honey. Spring and autumn are the best seasons — July and August are genuinely hot, and the ravine holds the heat into the evening. Winter is quiet, and the light stays low all day.
