About Ischia
Ischia is the big green island of the Bay of Naples — volcanic, terraced with vineyards, and built around thermal water that has been used since antiquity. The postcard is the Castello Aragonese: a fortress covering a rock islet off Ischia Ponte, joined to the island by a stone causeway that Alfonso of Aragon had built in 1441, so you can walk out to it and photograph back at the town. On the south coast, Sant'Angelo is a car-free hamlet of stacked pastel houses tied to a rocky headland by a sand isthmus, and a short walk east the Maronti beach runs for about three kilometres under crumbling cliffs, with steam still coming out of the ground at the Cava Scura end. Below Panza, a long flight of steps drops to the Sorgeto cove, where hot springs bubble straight into the sea and people swim there in winter. Above Citara bay, the Giardini Poseidon terrace pool after pool up a hillside facing the sunset. Ferries and hydrofoils run from Naples and Pozzuoli in under an hour. Late spring and September are the best weeks: warm water, working light, and the island back to its own pace.
