About Catania & the Etna foothills
Catania was buried by lava in 1669 and knocked down by the earthquake of 1693, and it was rebuilt out of what was lying around: black volcanic stone banded with pale limestone, which gives the whole centre a two-tone look you find nowhere else in Italy. Piazza del Duomo is the hinge — the cathedral of Sant'Agata on one side, the town hall on another, and in the middle the Fontana dell'Elefante, a smiling lava elephant carrying an Egyptian obelisk, which the city treats as its own portrait. Behind the square, down a few steps, La Pescheria fish market runs Monday to Saturday morning under the arches, wet, loud and completely uninterested in your camera, which is exactly why it photographs so well.
