About Catania & the Etna foothills
Catania was buried by lava in 1669 and knocked down by the earthquake of 1693, and it was rebuilt out of what was lying around: black volcanic stone banded with pale limestone, which gives the whole centre a two-tone look you find nowhere else in Italy. Piazza del Duomo is the hinge — the cathedral of Sant'Agata on one side, the town hall on another, and in the middle the Fontana dell'Elefante, a smiling lava elephant carrying an Egyptian obelisk, which the city treats as its own portrait. Behind the square, down a few steps, La Pescheria fish market runs Monday to Saturday morning under the arches, wet, loud and completely uninterested in your camera, which is exactly why it photographs so well. Via Crociferi climbs away from the noise in a straight line of church façades and lava paving, quiet enough to work in and shaded for most of the day.
