Why Tuscany
It is no accident that Tuscany is the region where couples from abroad most often get married in Italy: it delivers three completely different settings within an hour's drive, a long season from April to October, and the light that wedding photographers love the region for — warm, golden, with hills that step every evening sun down in layers. The three settings
Florence is the urban answer: Renaissance façades, the cathedral, the banks of the Arno, city palazzi with inner courtyards. A Florence wedding photographs elegantly and architecturally — and has the advantage of short distances for guests arriving without a hire car. Siena is the medieval answer: brick instead of marble, the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, lanes winding around the cathedral. Siena reads warmer and rougher in pictures than Florence — if you want the Gothic backdrop and fewer onlookers, choose Siena.
The Val d'Orcia is the landscape answer, and the reason half the world recognises Tuscan wedding photographs without ever having been there: cypress avenues, golden hills, single farmhouses on ridges. Weddings here happen in agriturismi and country villas, and the portraits are made directly in the landscape — no transfer, the setting starts at the garden gate.
The timeline that follows the light
The most common planning mistake at Tuscan weddings is a timeline that spends the best light of the day on the main course. The structure that works:

The first look — seeing each other before the ceremony, just the two of you and the photographer — is doubly valuable in Tuscany: it lifts the most emotional frame of the day out of the time pressure and frees the afternoon for guests rather than portrait lists. The golden hour is not negotiable: twenty-five minutes in which the couple disappears into the hills or onto the terrace with the photographer while the aperitivo runs. The summer light, honestly
From June to August the midday sun stands hard and high — a three o'clock ceremony in an open meadow is every photographer's enemy. The solution is not technique but the hour: ceremony not before five, shade for the aperitivo, portraits in the last hour before sunset. In May, September and October everything relaxes forward by an hour or two — and October lays misty mornings over the Val d'Orcia that are worth their own set of pictures.

Frequently asked questions
How long should the golden hour portraits actually take?
Twenty-five to thirty minutes is right, and longer is usually worse. The light is genuinely good for about forty minutes and genuinely excellent for fifteen of them, so the value is in being in position when it peaks rather than in staying out longer. Two shorter trips also beat one long one: ten minutes right after the ceremony while you are still emotional, then twenty at sunset once you have eaten something and relaxed.
Do we need a second photographer?
For fewer than fifty guests in one venue, usually not — a single photographer covers getting ready, ceremony and dinner comfortably. A second becomes worth it when two things happen at once: both partners getting ready in different places, a large guest list where reportage coverage matters, or a venue spread across buildings. In Tuscany the specific case that justifies it is a ceremony in town followed by a reception out in the countryside.
What happens if it rains?
Tuscan venues almost all have a covered plan B, because the region has been marrying people outdoors for decades — a loggia, a barn, a vaulted cellar. Photographically, rain is much less of a problem than couples fear: overcast light is soft and even, and wet stone in Florence photographs beautifully. What genuinely needs discussing in advance is timing, since a shower can move the golden hour portraits by an hour; agree with your photographer that the slot is flexible.
