Wedding Photographer in Italy: the Questions to Ask Before You Sign

Almost no wedding-photography disaster starts with a bad photographer. It starts with a vague agreement. The twelve questions below turn a generic quote into a contract you can actually read — and how a photographer reacts to being asked is itself half the answer.

About the day
1. How many hours of actual coverage? "Full day" can mean eight hours or sixteen. Count backwards: getting ready (start 90 minutes before you leave), ceremony, aperitivo, dinner, first dance. If your count reaches ten and the package covers eight, ask the overtime rate now — not at 10:30pm on the day.
2. Who exactly is shooting? At larger studios, the name on the website is not always the person who turns up. Get the photographer's name in the contract, and ask to see one ENTIRE wedding shot by that person — not the studio's highlight reel.
3. Second shooter: included or not? Above about 80 guests it changes the story you get back: both preparations, guest reactions during the ceremony, different angles of the first dance. It typically adds 20–30% and is worth every euro past a certain scale.
4. What happens if you are ill? The right answer names a network of backup photographers and how a replacement is chosen. "It has never happened" is not an answer.
About the money
5. Is travel included? The usual rule in Italy: included within 50–80 km, then a per-kilometre rate, and for real distances a night's accommodation. An Amalfi Coast wedding with a Rome-based photographer almost always carries a travel line — better to see it written down.
6. Deposit and balance — when and how much? The Italian standard: 20–30% on signing, balance by the wedding day or on delivery. Be wary of anyone who wants everything up front.
7. What if we cancel or move the date? Look for three scenarios in the contract: you cancel, you move the date (is the photographer free? does the deposit follow?), the photographer cancels.
About the photos
8. How many photos, and how fast? A full wedding day typically yields 400–800 delivered images. Honest high-season timelines: 4–8 weeks for the full gallery, with a 30–50 photo preview within days. "As soon as I can" is not a date.
9. Are all photos edited, or only some? The standard delivery is colour and exposure correction on everything, with deeper retouching on a selection. Ask what "edited" means for this photographer, with examples.
10. What rights do we get? In Italy copyright stays with the photographer; what you need in writing is unlimited personal use — printing, sharing, backing up. If you do not want to appear in their portfolio or on social media, privacy has to be written in. Many offer it; few volunteer it.

We couldn't recommend Georgiana more as a wedding photographer! From our very first meeting, we knew she would be an absolute dream to work with. 11. Do you know the venue? A scouting visit, or at least a study of other people's photos from it. And ask directly: where do portraits happen if it rains? A villa with a loggia saves the session; a beach with no plan B does not.
12. How do you work during the ceremony? In churches many priests restrict movement and flash; in town halls the rules change room by room. A professional knows this and raises it unprompted — if they don't, you do.
