Piazza del Campo at first light
The shell-shaped brick square the Palio is run on, empty and warm-toned for the first hour of the day, with the Torre del Mangia rising out of one corner.
About Piazza del Campo at first light
Get directionsIl Campo is neither flat nor square: it slopes down towards the Palazzo Pubblico in nine brick segments, and that slope is exactly what makes it photograph so well. From the top, beside the Fonte Gaia, the whole fan opens away below you and the tower closes the frame.
Photographers love it because the brick behaves like an enormous warm reflector. At sunrise the light comes in low from the east over the rooftops and bounces off the paving onto faces — soft, warm, almost impossible to get wrong. By midday the square is a glaring bowl; late afternoon works again, when the long shadow of the tower runs across the shell.
The only real problem is the crowd, and it depends on the season more than the hour: in April before eight the square can be yours, in August it will not be. Around the Palio (2 July and 16 August) it is fenced, sanded and closed for days — check the dates before booking. Sitting on the paving is normal and allowed, and it is the classic frame for a couple.
