The Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone
A line of marble busts along a balustrade with a four-hundred-metre drop to the sea behind them, and nothing else in the frame.
About The Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone
Get directionsThe Terrazza dell'Infinito is the far end of the Villa Cimbrone gardens, where the ridge stops and the ground simply ends. A stone balustrade lined with eighteen marble busts runs along the edge; behind it there is only air, the Gulf of Salerno four hundred metres below, and the coast running away to the south.
It is one of the few genuinely uncluttered viewpoints in Italy: no rooftops, no wires, no other buildings. That emptiness is what makes it work for couples — two people at the balustrade read against pure sea and sky, with the busts giving rhythm along the line. Morning light comes from the left along the coast and is clean and directional; afternoons are hazier but the haze itself stacks the headlands into soft receding layers, which many photographers prefer.
The gardens are private, ticketed and have fixed opening hours that end before sunset; check them, and check whether the villa hotel has an event, which can close parts of the grounds. It is a ten-minute walk from Ravello's main square along a stepped lane — level enough for most people but not for wheels. The rest of the garden, with its rose walk, crypt and cloister, easily fills a session on its own.
Best time to shoot
Morning for clean directional light; afternoon haze for layered headlands
Tips
Private and ticketed, closing before sunset — check the hours and whether the villa hotel has an event that closes part of the grounds.
