The 1693 earthquake flattened south-eastern Sicily, and what went up afterwards is the reason people come: a set of towns rebuilt from nothing, all at once, in the same late baroque and the same soft local limestone, which turns the colour of honey in the afternoon. Noto is the showpiece. Corso Vittorio Emanuele runs level through the centre and stages three churches in a row; the cathedral of San Nicolò sits above a wide flight of steps that works as a stage for anyone standing on it, and the dome you see was rebuilt after a collapse in 1996 and reopened in 2007. One street up, Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata carries six balconies held on carved lions, horses, sirens and grotesque faces — the single most photographed detail in town, and it faces a narrow lane, so morning light on it is soft. Half an hour west, Ragusa Ibla stacks its own baroque down a spur below the modern town, and Modica splits along a ravine with staircases climbing to its churches. South, on the sea, Marzamemi is a former tuna-fishing village whose square of stone cottages opens straight onto the water. Spring and autumn are ideal; the Infiorata carpets Via Nicolaci with flowers on the third weekend of May, which is beautiful and busy at once, and July and August are very hot at midday.

Drive down into Ibla and walk back up only as far as the Giardino Ibleo — the long staircase between the two towns is a view, not a route to shoot on.
Marzamemi and its stone square
A former tuna-fishing village whose square of low stone cottages opens straight onto the water.
Best time: Sunrise, which the square takes head-on, or late afternoon for soft shade and warm stone
Come before the restaurants set up: from late morning the square is covered in tables and umbrellas that are impossible to keep out of a wide frame.

On the third weekend of May the whole of Via Nicolaci is carpeted in flower petals for the Infiorata, which is spectacular and brings the year's biggest crowd to the one street you would otherwise have almost to yourselves. Church interiors each set their own rules on cameras, tripods and clothing, and some close for services in the middle of the day, so check opening times and photo policy before building a session around one.
